On this Independence Day, I believe there are two very important lessons we need to learn, or re-learn, from our nation’s founders. First, the Founding Fathers were not mere rebels who simply wanted to be free to ‘do their own thing.’ They believed in law and government as being necessary to restrain the evil influences working in mankind and as necessary for the protection of our God given rights. They tried long and hard to work out Continue reading “Declare Your Independence”

Leadership By Opinion Poll
I recently received an email from my Congresswoman (a Republican by the way) asking my opinion regarding the possibility of Congress raising the federal debt ceiling. Upon first glance, I started to react to the communiqué thinking “I need to tell her what I think so she will know what to do.” But before my fingers could even begin to type a reply, my brain started to kick in and I began to see the matter in another light. Continue reading “Leadership By Opinion Poll”
Constitution Party Video Channel – One Of My Other Hobbies
Most of you are probably aware of my involvement in the Constitution Party. What you may not be aware of is that I’ve been taking my video camera to Constitution Party meetings, recording the speeches and have now set up a Constitution Party video channel on Vimeo.com.
After years of attending national committee meetings, hearing great speeches and wishing Continue reading “Constitution Party Video Channel – One Of My Other Hobbies”
They Claim To Represent Conservatives
Every day I get letters or emails from several self-avowed ‘conservative’ organizations. There are dozens and dozens out there all claiming to represent the ‘Christian-conservative-Constitutional’ cause. Most of them are doing something good, or standing against something bad, yet over and over I find myself disappointed and feeling betrayed.
Take for instance an organization that I recently found myself compelled to confront for Continue reading “They Claim To Represent Conservatives”
But It Has Bipartisan Support!
A friend recently directed my attention to a YouTube video clip of a U.S. Senate hearing in which newly elected Senator, Rand Paul, unloaded a barge of righteous indignation on a bureaucrat from one of those multitude of federal agencies that seem determined to regulate every facet of our lives. While Senator Paul’s grilling of Kathleen Hogan from the Department of Energy was enjoyable enough to watch, I found Ms. Hogan’s response to the Senator to be the most telling part of the video. Continue reading “But It Has Bipartisan Support!”
The Spirit Of Partisan Politics
The subject of partisan politics recently crossed my path – not just the fact that partisan politics exists (something we’re all well aware of), but rather the dangers that it holds, its subtle nature and the extent to which it has crept into our thought process. Having been politically active for nearly two decades now, more than half that time spent in positions of leadership in both my county, state and national party, it seems I would have already learned this lesson. Continue reading “The Spirit Of Partisan Politics”
Staying Focused on the Big Picture
As a new year begins and a new Congress comes on the stage promising reform, fiscal accountability and a return to conservative principles, I’ve got to remind us all to stay focused on the big picture. Too often, our attention is diverted from the real and weighty issues that determine the future of our country, our liberty and our prosperity. Like the illusionist who diverts our attention from what is really going on, the political powers that be, along with the dominant media and political pundits, direct our attention to whatever is being billed as the major political battle of the day. But more often than not, those battles are being waged over what amounts to minutia or only minor differences in policy when compared to what I consider to be the big picture. Continue reading “Staying Focused on the Big Picture”
How Low Will We Go?
For several decades now, with each passing election cycle, conservatives find themselves called upon to lower their standards and vote for candidates who constitute a new low in a ‘less than Christian’ and ‘less than Constitutional’ standard. Conservatives are told they have no choice; that if they don’t vote for the Republican the Democrat will win; that in order to defeat the liberal, they must elect a neocon now and hope to somehow “hold his Continue reading “How Low Will We Go?”
Leading Without A Compass
I recently ran across a bit of information that at first confused me; then frustrated me; then made me question; then it made a light come on; then it brought my view of our so called ‘conservative’ Republican leaders in Congress to a new low.
Some years back, I ran across the Freedom Index published by the John Birch Society. The index is published once every 6 months and tracks key bills in Congress and the votes of each member of Congress on those bills. Votes are scrutinized for adherence to the U.S. Constitution, sound fiscal policy and a traditional foreign policy of avoiding ‘entangling alliances.’ Members of Congress are then rated from 0% to 100% for adherence to this standard. It’s Here! It’s Here! The New Republican Pledge to America is Here!
(a critical review from a Constitutional perspective)
So does the Republican’s new “Pledge to America” make you want to jump for joy, run up and down and shout? Well that’s what it’s supposed to do – at least that’s the effect the Republicans are hoping it will have on conservatives. However, it doesn’t really affect me that way, but then I’m not a conservative. I’m a Christian and a Constitutionalist and I just can’t quite buy into the Republican’s attempt to repackage and sell themselves to the Continue reading “It’s Here! It’s Here!
