In this message, we go inside the throne room of God to watch as Jesus Christ receives his new covenant inheritance, an inheritance that includes every promise God has ever made, an inheritance which he then turns around and shares with us as his joint heirs. This is the mystery kept hidden from ages past, but now revealed to us by his Spirit.
OUTLINE
The new covenant is a covenant of promise.
Titus 1:2 in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,
The promise is not earned, but inherited.
Romans 4:14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect,
The new covenant plan was kept hidden; it was a mystery.
Ephesians 3:9 and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ;
Promises and the Heir
Genesis 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Some apply these promises to Abraham’s natural descendants. Others point to Christ.
Galatians 3:16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “AND TO YOUR SEED,” who is Christ.
No flesh born of Adam has managed to inherit and possess the promises.
Romans 3:10 As it is written: “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NO, NOT ONE;
Promises are not earned, but there is a condition, and that condition is righteousness.
2 Corinthians 1:20 For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.
How many promises are yes, and amen, outside of Jesus?
Jesus Receiving His Inheritance
Rev 5:1 And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals.
Rev 5:2 Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?”
Rev 5:3 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it.
- Romans 3:10 As it is written: “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NO, NOT ONE;
Rev 5:4 So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it.
- The spirit of the apostle knew that the scroll contained something wonderful and beautiful, so much so that he wept much that no one would be able to open it and look upon its words.
Rev 5:5 But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.”
- Jesus prevailed over sin when he was “in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15).
- This is why Jesus told John the Baptist in Matthew 3:15, “for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.”
Rev 5:6 And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
- The number seven represents completion or perfection.
- Horns represent strength and authority.
- Jesus alone possesses complete and perfect strength and authority and the complete measure of the perfect Holy Spirit.
Rev 5:7 Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne.
Rev 5:8 Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
Rev 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
Rev 5:10 And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.”
Rev 5:11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands,
Rev 5:12 saying with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!”
- The things Jesus is being declared worthy of are promises he is inheriting in the new covenant.
Rev 5:13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”
Rev 5:14 Then the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped Him who lives forever and ever.
The seals are not releasing judgments contained in the scroll. They are unleashing and unveiling the new covenant into the earth while the last judgments of the old covenant are being carried out as that covenant vanishes away. God is juxtaposing the advent of the new covenant with the passing of the old.
Hebrews 8:13 In that He says, “A NEW COVENANT,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
The Inheritance Revealed to Us
John 16:14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
A Chain of Events
- In Acts 1:9, Jesus ascends into heaven.
- In Revelation 5, Jesus inherits all the promises of God contained in the new covenant, including the promise of the Holy Spirit.
- Jesus is now seated at the right hand of God, where he forever lives to make intercession for us as the mediator of the new covenant that he has just inherited.
- 10 Days after the ascension, on the Day of Pentecost, the promised Holy Spirit is poured out, and the mystery of the new covenant is revealed for the first time as Peter preaches it by inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
- The Holy Spirit continues His ministry of taking what Jesus has inherited in the new covenant. He revealed the mystery of salvation for the Gentiles to Peter in Acts 10. He revealed the new covenant plan to Paul. He even gave the “The Revelation of Jesus Christ” to John. And He continues to declare Christ today every time we open our Bible and receive rhema by the Holy Spirit from the word.
Claiming the Promises
2 Corinthians 1:20 For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.
Our access to the promises is by being in Jesus Christ, where all the promises are yes, and amen.
Romans 8:17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
Romans 4:16 Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all
